I would like to take the opportunity to express my utmost sincere gratitude to our treasurer, Dr. Jane Chen. She meticulously and singlehandedly, word for word, translated the multiple official and medical forms at the African Center into Chinese; so that our fellow Chinese patients at the free clinic will understand all the details of those pertinent forms and be able to relate their clinical histories and symptoms to our attending physicians. Consequently, appropriate diagnoses and treatments can be rendered to them. Furthermore, Dr. Chen has been contributing tremendously to ICMA in many ways behind the scenes. It has been an honor and joy to work with her because of her integrity, hard work and amiable personality.

President's Mid-Year Update

To my colleagues,

Since my election in early February to the Presidency of ICMA, many events have taken place. I researched and visited several Free Clinics and finally found a willing collaborator in the CEO of the African Community International. He offered us his space in the community clinic at 3737 North Meridian for our Free Clinic. We are operating under the banner "Asian Health Initiative, Community Clinic." We started last month and had 12 patients on our first clinic day. Our next clinic day will be on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 2:00-5:00 PM. So far, we have Drs. Peggy Hu, Han Xinqiang, David Yan, Stephen He as volunteer clinicians and I will serve as coordinator, office clerk and Ultrasonographer. Dr. Jane Chen and Dr.Hong Ma will help in the patient registration and history taking. I appealed to the different Chinese organizations and have received good responses for office help. Our need now is PHYSICIAN VOLUNTEERS!

We had a successful Free consultation in April at IUPUI and also had a Financial CME. Our next CME will be in October and possibly another Free Consultation at Carmel High School.

We on the board would like to have a Christmas get together and need your input. Would you like to meet in a restaurant or a club house that we would rent and have a pitch-in dinner?

Please email me if you can volunteer as a Physician on Friday afternoon or Saturday mornings. Also, let me know if you would like the get together at a restaurant or pitch-in at a club house.

2010 Spring Free Clinical Consultation

The ICMA Free Consultation started promptly at 1:00PM, April 18, 2010 in Room 165 at the IUPUI Engineering Building. Physician members representing Family Medicine were Dr. Peggy Hu; Diagnostic Radiology, Dr. Gonz Chua; Radiation Oncology, Dr. Benny Ko; Dentistry, Dr. Jane Chen; Cardiology, Dr. Xinqiang Han; Neurology, Dr. James Zhang; and two volunteer nurses from Dr. Peggy Hu's office. Dr. Hong Ma, a recently licensed physician, was also on board.

Approximately 24 patients with dental problems, medical problems like hypertension, osteoporotic fractures were seen. They were all in stable condition. Blood pressure measurements and glucose levels were also obtained. Appropriate consults and instructions for follow up with their respective practitioners were given.

The clinic ended at 3:00PM followed by a short meeting and assessment of the day's activity. It was felt to be successful with a good turnout. Plans in the future to attract the underserved restaurant workers were discussed. The group ended the day with a group picture for a job well done. My sincere thanks to the members of ICMA for their efforts.

Spring Meeting

On March 27, 2010, ICMA members attended an investment seminar and business meeting organized by Dr. Gonz Chua, ICMA president, at the famed Maggiano‘s Restaurant.

Mr. J. Keith Stucker, Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager for RBC Wealth Management, presented a seminar titled Investment Strategies for Uncertain Times. The objectives of the seminar were to assist members in learning the basics in investing, how market volatility can work for investors and how to develop a tactical approach to investing.

Mr. Shola Ajiboye, CEO of the African Community Center, came as a special guest of Dr. Gonz Chua. He discussed his experience in establishing the African Center 17 years ago and subsequently the Free African Clinic 5 years ago. He invited ICMA to associate with the Community Free Clinic in offering free medical services to Chinese and other Asian patients. There is ample space in the clinic and no obligation on our part. He suggested that in order to facilitate care of Asian patients, we also need an interpreter or secretarial help on days assigned for Chinese patients. He offered one day a week if needed. Dr. Gonz warmly accepted his invitation and will soon volunteer in the Clinic. However, involvement of ICMA will require further discussion and approval of the members.

After the seminar and talk, all of the attendees heartily enjoyed a very scrumptious Italian meal at Maggiano's provided by RBC Wealth Management. Dr. Gonz Chua presented his beautiful painting masterpiece to Mr. J. Keith Stucker in appreciation for providing the very informative seminar and luncheon for the ICMA members. Dr. Chua also presented a plaque to Dr. and Mrs. Patrick Lau in recognition for their dedicated service and contributions to ICMA.

It's December 12th, 2009, the Bayhill club house is dressed up with charming holiday lights, prepared itself for another group of people with it's warm interior and great location by the Bayhill lake. This time is the Indianapolis Chinese Medical Association. Approximately twenty members and their families gathered that evening to share their holiday spirit, reflect upon their past year, and look forward to the year ahead.

The annual party started around 6:30pm. The current president, Dr. Wang-Joy gave a report for 2009. A small gift was presented to Dr. Patrick Lau and his wife Mrs. Lau for their great dedication to ICMA during the past 2-3 years. As they move on due to family reason, they will be greatly missed here in Indy for their great sense of humor, knowledge and grace. It was announced that three board members will complete their terms, including Dr. Wang-Joy, Dr. Hua Luo and Dr. Patrick Lau. Dr. Peggy Hu, Dr. Gonzalo Chua, and Dr. Xinqiang Han will be the next board members along with current ones on board, Dr. Jane Chen and Dr. David Yan.

Dr. Jane Chen gave a brief financial report.

Before dinner, our Taichi Master, Zhao Chen, gave a summarized presentation about the Philosophy of Taichi, and demonstrated a few movements, which certainly helped spike up the members' appetite.

The potluck dinner was wonderful and tasty.

The entertainment for the evening started with two great dances from ICPAI. The dancers' stunningly beautiful performance was greatly appreciated. Three of our seniors brought to us a hilarious skit, "flatulence routine". It was such a great medical humor.

The rest of the evening was filled with Karaoke songs and laughter.

As a local volunteer based medical association, ICMA looks forward to continuing serving the Chinese and Asian community with it's variety of physicians, and culture background.

On September 13, 2009, our members dedicatedly served the Chinese community by volunteering their valuable time and effort to participate in the ICMA Free Clinical Consultation, held at Carmel High School.

Dr. Rudy Yung, ophthalmologist, and his IU medical students (Rao Chundury, Jake Trinidad, Jeff Nelson, Paul Withers, Kimberly Matchett, and Frank Hrisomalos) conscientiously performed thorough eye examination including fundoscopic study to screen for ophthalmological disorders among our fellow Chinese, particularly the elderly.

Other participating members included Dr. Jane Chen (dentist), Dr. Xinqiang Han (cardiologist), Dr. Steven He (internist), Dr. Peggy Hu (family medicine), Dr. Siming Hummer (psychiatrist & oriental medicine), Dr. Patrick Lau (radiologist), Dr. Wayne Lee (plastic surgeon), Dr. Mingzhen Li (traditional Chinese medicine), Dr. Zhengbin Lu (pathologist), Dr. Hua Luo (psychiatrist), Dr. Qin Wang-Joy (nephrologist), Dr. Raymond Wong (dentist), Dr. Hillary Wu (medical oncologist), Dr. David Yang (family medicine) and Dr. James Zhang (neurologist).

A large number of attendees turned out for the event. They were, without a doubt, greatly benefited from the services rendered by the various medical specialists and dentists. Screening tests including blood pressure, blood glucose and blood cholesterol were also offered at the consultation.

九月十三日星期天下午印城中国医生协会( ICMA)在Carmel High School为当地华人提供了秋季免费咨询和指导服务。参加义诊的有行医多年的医生们也有印第安那医学院眼科专业的住院医生。义诊科目包括：家庭全科 (严皓，胡培怡)，心血管科 (韩新强)，病理科 (卢正斌)，眼科 (翁志华)，肾科 (王勤)，中医 (李明真), 疼痛/精神心理科(陈思明), 神经科 (张京)，放射科(刘庆良), 血液/肿瘤科 (吴红云), 内科 (何成师)，精神科 (骆华), 整容外科 (Wayne Lee), 牙科 (王重光，陈剑)。

本次义诊吸引了许多印城的华人前来就诊和咨询。王勤和严皓医生还为在老年中心的居民们提供了专车接送。今年的活动除了提供免费测血压，血糖和胆固醇，翁志华医生和他的学生们还使用了眼科疾病检测仪为就诊者作了眼压和眼底检测。协会的刘庆良医生夫妇还特地为大家准备了医疗卡以便记录保存。各位医生耐心周到的解答和服务为印城华人提供了便利。义诊活动一直持续到下午四点多。协会主席王勤医生计划明年的活动将会增加一些新的咨询项目同时也欢迎大家提出建议。联系方法：icmaonline@gmail.com

The 2008 ICMA Annual meeting was held at the Bayhill Clubhouse, Carmel, Indiana on the evening of December 13, 2008. Dr. Qin Wang-Joy succeeded Dr. Zhengbin Lu as the President of the Indianapolis Chinese Medical Association. Dr. Wang-Joy emphasized that, under her presidency, ICMA would continue to fulfill its missions and achieve its goals, particularly in the realm of promoting the health of the Chinese Community in the Greater Indianapolis area. Additionally, ICMA plans to sponsor various activities and functions for the members and their families.

After the dinner, an exciting entertainment was provided by Dr. Jane Chen, demonstrating Tai Chi and Miss Li, illustrating Kung Fu.

Indianapolis Chinese Medical Association was originally organized in 1997 and became registered as a nonprofit organization in 2006. ICMA is not affiliated with any religious or political organization. The main goals and objectives of ICMA are:

Serving the Chinese community with free medical consultations;
Facilitating communication and networking among Chinese physicians;
Promoting friendship and collaboration among ICMA members and other Asian-American organizations in Indiana.

Qualification for Membership: any individual with a M.D., D.O., MBBS, D.D.S., whether or not practicing in the State of Indiana, and/or any individual directly involved with patient care, including, without limitation, chiropractor, nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, physical therapist, or pharmacist, who supports the purposes, goals, objectives and programs of ICMA is eligible for Membership.

One of the primary activities of ICMA is the Free Medical Consultation, which is held annually. Various medical specialists have volunteered their valuable time and skill at the consultations, including physicians from Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Pain Management, Physical Medicine, Medical Oncology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Radiology, Chinese Traditional Medicine, and Dentistry. Additionally, a pharmacist, nurse and medical assistant have also participated in the consultation.

Other activities that provide an opportunity to promote friendship, networking and education include the summer picnic, annual dinner meeting and journal club meetings. The ICMA Health Newsletter, which is published monthly, pertains to and promotes healthy living and lifestyles, as well as healthy aging.

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has created a call center at the Communicable Disease Department to answer general questions regarding H1N1 flu for Indiana residents. Residents may call (317) 221-2000 from 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday.
